Alpe d’Huez

In : France

The south facing plateau with resort Alpe d’Huez enjoys over 300 days of sun every year. The sun dries the last drops of water from the tired bodies of the cyclists during ‘Tour de France’, but during winter it gives a boost of energy to the skiers hungry for black runs descending from Pic Blanc.

The must here is La Sarenne, the longest run in the world, which provides 16 km of excitement, which last some 1,5 hour down to Gorges de Sarenne.
The local trophy ‘À chacun son Everest’ is awarded by a skier, who pass all four slopes, which total over 8 000 m of altitude span.
These runs are as follow:
Le Pic Blanc 3330 m – La Villette 1295 m
Le Pic Blanc 3330 m – L’Enversin d’Oz 1125 m
Le Pic Blanc 3330 m – Oz en Oisans 1350 m
Le Pic Blanc 3330 m – Gorges de Sarenne 1510 m

The upper part of Pic Blanc is occupied by Glacier de Sarenne, a popular place also for summer skiing.
The sunny days mean the cloudless night sky, and several times during the season the special night skiing is commenced during the full moon.
But noone needs to wait that long to enjoy the night skiing, thanks to the illuminated slope, open every Tuesday and Thursday.
Another slope Luge Nocturne – Laurent SalinoThe Butte de l’Éclose becomes an illuminated playground for sledding with family and friends, open every night.

But not every skier is a professional, there are many of slopes for less advanced ones, and even four green runs are free for the ‘firsttimers’, who after practicing can enter more demanding slopes.

Skiing, sledging, snowshoes, two snowparks, 50 km of cross-country skiing trails, off-piste areas do not complete the winter activities range.

The area is perfect for ice climbing, especially the ice cave located at 2 600 m.
Heliski is forbidden in France, but you can arrange the flights to white powder areas in Italy, or Switzerland, which are, ‘just over the mountain’.

The ski area “Grand Domaine” consists of Alpe d’Huez (1860 m) and five resorts, villages: Auris-en-Oisans (1600m), La Garde(1500m), Oz-en-Oisans(1350 m), Vaujany (1250 m) and Villard-Reculas (1480 m).
