In medieval times it has been invaded by the Turks, then became part of Austria-Hungary Empire, during the Second World War was occupied by Germans, and later on incorporated into Yugoslavia. Yet Slovenians here never loose their character and national integrity, maybe due to a little help from wine growing on sunny slopes of nearby mountain Mariborsko Podhorje. The city offers numerous wine cellars, galleries, theatres, even a casino, everything just about 10 minutes from the slopes – a perfect apre-ski resort. But you do not even have to go out of the runs to enjoy dining, the mountain has the road access to the top, thus there are several hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops just near the upper lift stations.
The modern lifts and artificial snow support guarantee the perfect skiing conditions for the whole season which lasts here from December till March.
The carefully prepared slopes cut within the forest are good for skiers of every skills level. There are ski schools for the beginners and advanced training centre with speed test run.
On the slopes of Mariborsko Podhorje are held annual Women FIS World Cup competitions with the local name Golden Fox Trophy, organized this year for 47 time.
Maribor-Podhorje is the largest ski resort in Slovenia and features venues for various ski activities, night illuminated run, snowpark, 1km run for sledding, 27 km of cross-country trails and ice rink.
