Some 10 km from the border with Italy, hidden within a group of 3000′s Alpine peaks lies a small village Val d’Isere ( 1850 m ).
On the opposite side of lake Lac du Chevril the four escort-style villages form resort Tignes ( 2 100 m ) with impressive ski area under La Grande Motte (3 656 m ).
Some ski runs in the upper part of La Grande Motte go through the glacier, making the La Grande Motte popular summer ski area, opened July-September.
Another glacier, De Pissillas, this time near Val d’Isere also is prepared for summer skiing, yet not as popular as the latter.

who learned to ski on the surrounding slopes.
L’espace Killy features total 300 km of slopes shared half-half between Tignes and Val d’Isere. The ski runs are considered to be rather demanding, and the whole area is famous for off-piste skiing with perfect snow especially on the slopes of Le Fornet, Bellavare, Solaise and Grande Motte.
The most difficult run is La Face de Bellavare, with upper part opened only during ski competition, the total length is 2,4 km with the altitude pan of 890 m.
There are two snowparks, one with half-pipe, and artificial-lit slopes Le Claret and Le Millonex in Tignes.
The architecture of Val d’Isere is not very appealing, but the apre-ski and the nightlife is unbeattable. The restaurants offer local French and Savoyan specialties, and rue Principale street features many of shops, cafes and late night discos.
