Not far from Zagreb skiers have the nice quiet place for snow fun on the slopes of Medvednica mountain. The name can be translated as Bear mountain, either from the friendly animals once lived in the area, or to prove the strength of medieval watchtowers once protecting the hills.
The higherst peak Sljeme became popular for montain hiking as early as in the half of 19th century, in 1870 the climbers build the wooden piramid, soon eplaced by more permanent shelter.
Before the Second World War Medvednica featured ski jump K35, and after the war the hill received the tower of Zagreb TV station. In the close neigbourhood there are several hotels, mountain huts and restaurants with edible food, as the place can be quite crowded during the weekends, where people use local tram and hourly bus connection from Zagreb.
With about one thousand metres Sljeme cannot win with the Alpine resorts, but the artificial snow support helps to mantain the area skiable for about four months.
Since 2005 the resort features Fis Ski competitions, first women paved the way and have the annually event know as Snow Queen Trophy, and recently there are men races hosted there as well.
The interesting landscape and nice food make this small resort worth trying if you happened to stay in Zagreb.
